We are beyond thrilled to announce that our @riamdublin Royal Irish Academy of Music (RIAM) project has been honoured with two prestigious awards at the 2024 KPMG Property Industry Excellence Awards, celebrating the pinnacle of architectural innovation and sustainable design.

Our project was recognised with the Architecture Award for being "a visionary design that seamlessly blends the timeless elegance of Georgian architecture with cutting-edge modern functionality, highlighted by a world-class academy and recital hall."

A highlight of the evening was the Judges' Sustainable Ireland Property Award, which praised our "exceptional architectural design that holds sustainability at the core." The judges emphasised our 'fabric-first' approach, highlighting low-energy HVAC systems, a high-performance Building Management System, solar and water optimisation, and innovative features like contemporary aluminium curtain wall glazing and living green roofs that enhance biodiversity. This award stands as a powerful testament to our commitment to pushing the boundaries of what's possible in educational space design.

A heartfelt thank you to RIAM for the inspiring brief, KPMG Property Industry Excellence Awards, the distinguished judges, and our incredible team who continue to challenge and redefine the possibilities of architectural design.

Recently our London studio team traded drafting tables for hammers and saws, volunteering at a local community allotment. Working alongside dedicated local volunteers, we helped construct critical infrastructure - building seven roof trusses for their community shop, a space that's been waiting decades for renewal.

These allotments are more than just a green space. They're a lifeline for local residents, providing opportunities to grow food, connect with nature and build community resilience. By supporting a self-funded, volunteer-led initiative, we're doing what architects do best: solving problems and creating spaces that matter.

As we wrap up our London studio week, we're excited to share that next week we'll be highlighting our Dublin studio - stay tuned for more inspiring stories and groundbreaking projects!

We’re thrilled to unveil our winning interior and interpretation design for the iconic London Irish Centre in Camden—the UK’s flagship Irish cultural institution and one of the most significant Irish centres worldwide.

Since 1850, this cherished institution has grown from Victorian homes into a vital hub for Irish culture, hosting everything from traditional music and poetry to essential community support services.

Working alongside Coffey Architects and Tandem Design, our approach reimagines the Centre’s historic space into a cohesive, accessible cultural hub. The Centre's current building, while steeped in history and cherished memories, had grown organically through extensions and adaptations into a maze of interconnected spaces challenging to navigate. By creating a new entrance and central circulation system, the team unified the building's diverse spaces to better serve its vital mission.

Through thoughtful interpretation design, we’ve ensured that every space tells a story—celebrating Irish heritage while embracing contemporary culture. The reimagined spaces—from dynamic performance venues and exhibition areas to welcoming cafés and community zones— are designed to breathe new life into the Centre while preserving its soul and honouring its remarkable heritage.

As the Centre steps confidently into its next chapter, our design ensures it will continue to be the beating heart of Irish culture in London, inspiring and supporting future generations while celebrating its deep roots.

Our London Studio is proud to announce unanimous planning consent for 'Ironmonger Yard'- a transformative 296-unit Build-to-Rent development in historic Rochester! What makes this achievement even more remarkable is how it was secured: through an intensively collaborative process and engagement with local stakeholders.

Drawing inspiration from Rochester's rich heritage, we envisioned more than just buildings - we created a vibrant new public square, from which the project takes its name. This thoughtfully designed space forms the heart of the community, with homes arranged to create an intimate neighbourhood atmosphere that encourages interaction and belonging.

The success of this placemaking vision was achieved through continual dialogue with the council, urban design officers, and local community. This proactive approach, combined with respect for Rochester's heritage, created an environment of mutual trust and shared vision. Through regular workshops and open communication, we transformed potential challenges into opportunities, enabling us to achieve planning consent on an incredibly tight timeline.

The result? A development that truly serves its community, with a diverse mix of homes including rental flats, affordable homes and later living apartments. Ironmonger Yard doesn't just provide homes - it creates a new public heart for Rochester that harmoniously blends with the city's historic fabric while delivering modern, accessible living spaces with a mix of tenures to suit all the community.

This project exemplifies our #4StudiosOneTODD philosophy at its best: bringing people together, fostering genuine collaboration and delivering exceptional architecture that respects both heritage and community needs. London Studio has been working with the London Business School on a series of refurbishment projects across its Sussex Place Campus in the heart of Westminster conservation area, breathing new life through thoughtful revival and sustainable transformation.

The Plowden Building - reimagining a tired 1980s office block into a vibrant Student Hub at the heart of Westminster's conservation area. The transformation features a striking feature staircase weaving through a triple-height lightwell, creating dynamic connections between floors. But it's more than just beautiful design - we're delivering a truly inclusive space with universal accessibility and neurodiverse-friendly environments, while prioritising sustainability through adaptive reuse and enhanced building performance.

E Wing Executive Education building - through carefully planned internal upgrades, we're modernising teaching spaces, improving circulation and creating contemporary interiors that reflect the prestigious nature of executive education. Our interventions are designed to optimise the existing 1980s structure while delivering spaces that meet the evolving needs of today's business leaders.

Earlier this year our London studio relocated to Farringdon, not far from Clerkenwell, the area they called home in the late 1980s. Located at 31-35 Kirby Street, our new offices sit at the heart of a creative community - a meaningful homecoming, as our founder, the late Barrie Todd, was among the first architects to establish a presence in this area over 40 years ago.

Tim Burgess, Studio lead, notes: "Our recent move to Clerkenwell positions our studio in the heart of the London’s design district. The Kirby Building is home to numerous creative businesses, and the staff love the great shared spaces, especially the roof terrace!"

From volunteering at Knockbreda Primary School to racing dragon boats for NI Hospice and sharing career insights at Sullivan Upper School, our team's commitment extends far beyond the studio. This year, they've raised funds for Cancer Fund for Children, Air Ambulance NI, supported the Belfast Homeless Appeal, and conquered both the Belfast Marathon and our "Tour de TODD"!

We begin our journey in Belfast, where TODD's story began. From our early days in the distinctive Hill Street Studio to our current home in the iconic Titanic House, our studios have always reflected our architectural vision.

We are pleased to announce that planning approval has been secured for Pendleton House in Salford, Northwest England. This transformative scheme will deliver 88 high-quality residential units through the sensitive adaptation of a local heritage asset and development of adjacent brownfield land.

Our Manchester team has stewarded this project from inception and is now advancing into the technical design phase. We are proud to continue to contribute to Salford’s resurgence through sensitive design that respects the local character while providing modern, sustainable living spaces.
