Whiteabbey Nightingale Hospital

In response to the ongoing Covid – 19 Pandemic the Northern Ireland Department of Health recently instructed the development of a further regional Nightingale facility that could help to increase bed capacity. This additional Nightingale was developed on the Whiteabbey Hospital site and it will be managed as a regional resource. The facility was officially opened by Robin Swann Health Minister.

The Nightingale at Whiteabbey will generally cater for low acuity/step down patients, however the scheme has been designed and delivered to provide some flexibility to step up care when required.

TODD Architects were appointed as architects and lead consultants working along with Beattie Flanigan, Doran Consulting and Currie & Brown as an integrated design team.

The project involved the design, development and delivery of a 100 bed Nightingale Hospital on the Whiteabbey Hospital site, Newtownabbey. The challenge of delivering this type facility to such a programme was unprecedented so our healthcare design team had to draw on their previous extensive experience of designing world-leading healthcare across the UK.

These critical designs were delivered to support the tireless work of the NHS in a time of crisis with the overarching shared goal of rapidly delivering the facilities to meet this regional need.
