South West Acute Hospital, Enniskillen

The practice was appointed with local architects Hall Black Douglas and health planners Watkins Gray International, following a competitive interview process to prepare an exemplar design for a new £250m major acute hospital for the south west of Northern Ireland. With procurement proceeding under a PFI contract, this exemplar approach was introduced by the commissioning bodies both with a view to increasing design quality, whilst also reducing bidding costs.

Approximately 60,000sqm the new hospital is located on the outskirts of Enniskillen Down on a sensitive green-field site over looking Lough Wolf. The project incorporates a full range of facilities required in a modern acute hospital.

Full accident and emergency services, imaging, theatres, various ward and a host of out-patient facilities are included, designed to integrate into the countryside and benefit from the views to both the hills and lake. The design and procurement has proceeded through government review and PFI processes.
