The Portland Building, Brighton

The Portland Building is a four storey (+basement) c. 30,000sqft Grade A office development. located in the North Laine Conservation Area in Brighton.

The brownfield site presented a number of design challenges, particularly in looking to integrate a contemporary building into the historic setting. The build forms steps to relate to the differing heights of the adjoining building and the elevational treatment has been influenced by the architecture in the surrounding streets.

The design was developed in close collaboration with both the developer MRP and the City Council’s planners, to maximise the development treatment of the site, but also to contribute positively to the city’s rich architectural heritage.
